The Streaming DJ and His Equipment

Whether you are a seasoned vet, or are just getting into the DJ game, you have obviously noticed the increased potential when it comes to the technologies of computers and the internet. Now some may say the most useful way to take advantage of these new technologies is through promotion and advertisements, which usually amounts to a weak antiquated MySpace page, or a web page with a few promotional artist photos, but for the DJs who really want to get themselves out there, there is only one thing they should be concerned about, streaming their music over the internet.

Essentially there are two basic methods involved when a DJ chooses enter into the digital realm of the internet and streaming audio. For those DJs who are more comfortable with traditional equipment than computers and software the process can be completely software based and happen all within the confines of the computer after a mix has been created. This usually involves simply downloading software and uploading your music and letting the software work its magic. For Djs who are more experienced with computers this is a combination of both software and digital capture devices that work in conjunction with the computer and digital DJ equipment.

The first option is similar to mp3 recording and then posting on a web page that in turn work with a server for people to listen to. The appeal of this option for some DJs is that this can be done by someone else without any sacrifice to their production process. A DJ can create a mix in a way that they have always done with standard mixing equipment. Rather than marry both processes into one by integrating DJ equipment with the digital technology of the computer, this allows two separate processes for the most part.

The second option for those who wish to more fully embrace technology is the more fully integrated technology into the DJ equipment itself. With this option the transfer of music to computer is seamless in the sense that hit happens in real time as the DJ works. The DJ equipment in this scenario is produced specifically to be integrated with the computer and all production is digitally saved. This allows seamless uploading without the need for software that converts, produces, and publishes. This is also a very good excuse to go ahead and upgrade some of that DJ equipment that has been begging for it over the years.

Whatever a DJs choice in method for streaming audio over the internet, you can rest assured this is an effective way to increase the circulation of a DJs work. From club to online and back again with the slightest of effort on the part of the artist. While some may resist the mass migration to the web, those who embrace it will reap the benefits that the digital realm has to offer. While the medium changes the art form remains the same, from records, to CDs, mp3 turntables, and online audio streaming, the DJ continues to survive amongst the ever changing digital landscape of music.
